Last week, I returned from a powerful 5-day retreat with the Team Coaching Studio, and I’m still tingling with everything I experienced and learned.
This wasn’t just about tools or techniques. It was about contact – true contact with ourselves, and with each other.
I went in knowing it would ask a lot of me. I would need to be courageous, vulnerable, uncomfortable, open, curious, and empathetic. And I was.
The experience that followed was nothing short of transformative.
When We Show Up Whole
One of the most impactful moments came through the feedback I received.
At first, people met what I now call the “Polished, Together Ella.” But as the retreat unfolded, I allowed more of the Whole Ella to enter the space – playful, emotional, thoughtful, curious, vibrant, and real.
That’s when true contact happened.
People felt drawn not to the polished version of me, but to the whole version. And that shift created a ripple effect – deepening relationships faster and more meaningfully than I could have imagined.
Why This Matters in Coaching
As a coach, whether I’m working 1:1 with individuals, in groups, or with teams, this lesson sits at the very heart of my practice.
We often think coaching is about skills, models, or frameworks. And yes, those matter. But what I keep learning, again and again, is that:
The quality of our coaching is deeply influenced by the interior condition of the coach. (Thank you Georgina Woudstra, MCC, ACTC, via Bill O’Brien, for this timeless truth.)
When we do the inner work to show up whole – and create the space for others to do the same – something profound happens. We go beyond surface-level change and tap into the real transformation.
The power of truly being present, listening deeply and being in contact with the person or people in front of you creates a container of trust that enables the true work to happen.
Ultimately, our work as transformational coaches is to create the space for newness to emerge. Whether that looks like new ways of working, connecting, collaborating, communicating or being – fundamentally, we are enabling our clients to access the intelligence and wisdom in themselves and the system around them.
In Practice: Individual, Team & Group Coaching
Here’s how this shows up across my coaching work:
🔹 Individual Coaching Clients often come to work through specific goals or challenges. But real movement often begins when we slow down and create space for the whole person to be seen. It’s from that place that clarity, alignment, and action emerge.
🔹 Team Coaching Teams don’t just need better tools – they need better connection. When team members are able to see and hear each other more deeply, trust grows. From there, performance, innovation, and resilience follow naturally.
🔹 Group Coaching Groups offer a rich, reflective space where shared learning meets individual insight. When people show up whole in a community, something powerful happens: they start seeing themselves in others, and vice versa.
An Invitation
Here is what I am inviting you to explore:
- What would it look like for you to bring your whole self into your work and relationships?
- What’s possible when your team or group creates space for that kind of contact?
- How might coaching support you – or your organisation – in moving towards that?
Whether you’re navigating a leadership transition, growing a team, or seeking deeper alignment with your values, we’d love to explore what’s possible together.
