Reinventing Reinvention

Ella Jaczynska

During the first few weeks of a new year, the narrative “out with the old, and in with the new” and reinvention seems to be inescapable. In our world currently things are changing rapidly and we are hearing about businesses, ways of life, ways of working and many other things being reinvented to either accomodate or be one step ahead of the new norms.

Speaking to friends and colleagues, their reaction to this New Year reinvention often seems to be one of perplexity or anxiety. Who am I and what will I lose if I’m reinventing myself? Will I have to start over? What do I need to be for my future?

And yet, in so many other areas of life (and business!) agility and adaptability are lauded. So, for this issue of Mindset Matters, I want to reframe and reinvent reinvention. This is not about abandoning what works, but having the agility to adapt and grow in a way that feels considered, deliberate and relevant to what is needed for the present and future.

The Reality of Today’s Business Environment

Modern reinvention should be framed within the context of today’s business world. The rapid pace of change in how businesses operate has filtered through to every aspect of working life.

It’s not just the obvious changes such as the advance and impact of technology. It’s also the more fundamental shifts in how we work, where we work and leadership expectations – both in terms of what leaders expect from their teams, and our own expectations of what good leadership looks like.

We often say that standing still means being left behind – and this is particularly true into today’s business environment.

Redefining What Reinvention Actually Means

Before I explore what I think reinvention means, I want to be clear about what it doesn’t mean. Flip what you think you know about reinvention on its head. It’s not about throwing anything away. And it’s certainly not about losing the essence of who we are (more on this later!)

Reinventions should be about:

  • Agility and adaptability
  • Evolving existing skills
  • Learning complementary new capabilities
  • Letting go of approaches that no longer serve
  • Reflecting on whether your purpose and identity have evolved, and what aspects of yourself that may need to change to stay aligned with them.

Holding onto Your Authenticity Amid Change

So, we know that reinvention doesn’t mean that EVERYTHING changes. In fact, there is one vital constant that should guide our reinvention.

And that is your authenticity.

To successfully adapt, evolve and learn, we need to recognise that we may feel some tension between “change” and “identity.” The key question is, how do we evolve how we work without losing who we are?

If you are able to name and protect your values and your purpose, your authenticity will remain. This sounds simple, but in practise can be more challenging than you might think. And this is where coaching can support your reinvention process.

The Role of Coaching in Modern Reinvention

A specialist coaching resource can support individuals and teams to:

Make Purpose aligned to intentional choices about growth and change –

Focus on your Purpose, whether as a team or an individual.

A common trap people fall into is mixing up ‘Purpose’ with ‘Objective’ or ‘Mission.’ Purpose is about why a Team needs to exist, or the meaning for an individual role. Objectives are about the what and how. Questions you can ask yourself are – where do you need to be and where do you want to be to achieve this Purpose? If the desired end point has changed, how will you get there? What are the specific areas of growth you need to focus on?

Navigate uncertainty –

As the world of work and business continues to evolve at pace, coaching can help individuals and teams to find their focus, their way and their place within it. This may be their version of reinvention.

Build self-awareness and resilience –

Recognising your traits or behaviours that no longer serve is an important step, the next is determining how to remove them and what should grow in their place instead. With all this change and pace, developing resilience to overcome challenges and bumps in the road is key.

Reinventing in Practice: Mastering Mindsets Coaching and Development Programmes

We at Mastering Mindsets have plans for our own version of reinvention. We are seeing a definite shift in business needs and, as we all know standing still isn’t an option!

Whilst we have had great feedback on how impactful our coaching and development programmes have been to date; we see the need to develop in a number of areas:

a) New offers to further support Boards and Senior Leaders

b) A drive to satisfy an increased demand for Team and Group Coaching

c) Embracing AI and technology and how it is shifting the Coaching Industry

And we can attest to the fact that whilst reinvention can be daunting – it is essential, exciting and energising as well!
