New Year Rituals

Ella Jaczynska

As some of you know, every New Year’s Day I have a quiet ritual: I clean and repair my shoes and boots.

I brush them, polish them, repair what can be repaired — and I let go of the pairs that have reached the end of their useful life. Shoes that once served me well, but no longer fit where I am now.

It has always felt symbolic.

Brushing out the old. Repairing what still has value. Making space for what comes next.

This year, I extended the ritual. I tackled a cupboard in the dining room — one that had quietly accumulated items over many years. Things I once thought I might need “one day,” but never actually used. Letting them go felt unexpectedly light.

It struck me how powerful these small, physical acts can be as metaphors for how we prepare ourselves for a new year. (see another of my blogs exploring how a polished-up ‘Old’ can become a powerful, impactful ‘New’.)

When we clear clutter — whether from cupboards, diaries, or habits — we create space. Space to think more clearly. To feel less weighed down. To move forward with more intention.

Setting ourselves up well for a new year isn’t only about goals and plans. It’s also about what we choose to release — mentally, emotionally, and physically — so we can step into what’s next with more ease.

Sometimes, it really does start with a pair of shoes!
