On this International Women’s Day, I wanted to highlight one of the quiet pressures modern female leaders face:
How do you be both strong and compassionate, without being judged for either?
Today’s female leaders are told they need to be decisive, to hold the vision and drive performance.
But also… to lean into their softer qualities of being empathetic, inclusive and to maintain a steady emotional temperature within teams.
The women I work with don’t lack capability. What they often wrestle with is how to balance being clear and decisive without being labelled “hard.” Or how to be compassionate and empathetic without being labelled ‘too soft’ and then overlooked for key promotions.
Effective female leaders integrate
In my experience, the most effective leaders don’t choose between the two – they integrate them. And integrate them with authenticity, groundedness and without bending themselves out of shape to please others or adjust to what others tell them they should be.
And there is another layer of leadership that is often forgotten: ensuring congruent communication. When we are clear about the type of leader we are, and want to be known for, and when we have found and integrated the right balance of empathy/compassion and clarity/decisiveness and strength, we also need to ensure that all our communication – written, verbal, informal, presentations, and body language – is consistent and congruent with the balance we have found.
Everything I have seen, heard and experienced shows me that that’s what sustainable leadership looks like.
This International Women’s Day, I’m celebrating the women who lead with both edge and empathy – who refuse to believe they have to trade one for the other – and who communicate and articulate with strength and pride.
