Team Facilitation versus Team Coaching

Ella Jaczynska

What is the difference between Team Facilitation and Team Coaching?

Last month, in our newsletter, we started to touch on Team Development and promised to explore this theme further in our next issue.

We are really pleased that there is increasing focus on Team Coaching; the dynamics, the interplay, and how a team can be developed as a single entity rather than a collection of individuals.

When working with Teams, we are usually asked to undertake two activities to expand the team’s effectiveness and impact: Team Facilitation and Team Coaching.

So, what do we mean by these terms?

Team Facilitation usually focuses on a specific event (such as meetings, away days, or workshops) to achieve immediate objectives. We, as facilitators, structure discussions, manage time, and ensure equal participation while remaining neutral on your content.

Team Coaching is the ongoing development of a team as a single entity. This coaching enables the team to find its power and purpose collectively. It also allows for its members to connect, communicate and collaborate.  We focus on improving team performance and dynamics over time. The coach helps the team identify patterns, develop new capabilities, and achieve longer-term goals through questioning, feedback, and guided reflection.

The coach serves as a catalyst, helping the team discover their own solutions while building capacity for continuous improvement and self-direction. Importantly, this work is team-led and allows the team to self-assess and course-correct in the future.

Why would you undertake Team Coaching?

There are many benefits to team coaching – some of which you will see very quickly, others manifest over the longer term for lasting change.

Short Term

  • Better connection and communication together.
  • Understanding each other and maximising each other’s strengths.
  • Turning conflict and clashes into collaboration and co-creation.
  • To reach an aligned purpose with clarity of direction and strategy
  • To achieve a more precise definition of the process needed to get there together
  • An increase in effective decision-making by surfacing diverse perspectives and addressing conflicts constructively.

Mid-Term

  • Getting more out of your teams – increased business results, profit optimisation, business opportunities, innovation mindsets and adaptability as teams learn to leverage their combined strengths and capabilities.
  • Increase your team’s drive, motivation, engagement, resilience, and wellbeing.
  • Deliver holistic impact on the business as a good role model for teamwork.
  • Help your team develop self-awareness and continuous growth by providing ongoing support and encouraging the practice of new habits and mindsets.

What would we achieve through Team Facilitation?

Team Facilitation is a process focused on guiding the team through specific tasks or discussions, ensuring that the team stays on track and effectively collaborates. This would be the best option for a team needing to guide and manage a specific group process or interaction.

  • Structured guidance for specific meetings
  • Neutral process management
  • Help to reach immediate decisions or outcomes
  • Workshop or event leadership
